Ongoing Campaigns
Protect Shingle Creek Campaign
A large commercial development called Tuscana Planned Development is pursuing an application to place high density commercial buildings and condos in the heart of the Shingle Creek Wetlands. This area is not only extremely biodiverse, it is also the headwaters to the Everglades. This area is a mitigation area for excessive emergency flooding in the surrounding neighborhoods within its basin and is an essential carbon sink and aquifer purification area for water purification. We must do everything we can to say no to the Tuscana Planned Development and rally the community to Protect Shingle Creek!

Save Split Oak Forest Campaign
November 2020, residents of Central Florida had the choice to protect this forest in perpetuity by voting YES on Amendment 2. They voted by more than 86% of the vote to affirm the existing protections of this sensitive conservation area. However, FWC, Orange and Osceola County have continued talks with the Central Florida Expressway authority to pursue the destructive toll road through Split Oak Forest and we are continuing to organize around this issue. If these protection, some of the strongest legal protections in the state, are erroded, it will set a precedent for future legal fights along other conservation areas around the State of Florida. Ultimately, this fight is needed to protect all conservation lands in the entire State!
Help us save the lives of thousands of animal species that call this forest home by donating to Friends of Split Oak Forest so they can retain legal council and take action in court!

Save, Don't Pave Spruce Creek Campaign
A large invasive and destructive toll road proposal by the Florida Department of Transportation is underway and the people of Volusia County are organizing to stop the FDOT Pioneer Interchange Expressway being planned for the heart of Spruce Creek. the proposed highway interchange at Interstate-95 and Pioneer Trail in New Smyrna Beach is not in the public’s best interest, and that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers should deny it. Residents are concerned about the high cost ($120+ million of taxpayer dollars), reduction in quality of life, and most importantly, negative impacts to the environment that such a development would bring.

#StopTheStarve Manatee Feeding Program Campaign
Due to millions of gallons of human waste being dumped into the Indian River Lagoon, causing massive nutrient leaks and algae blooms which later killed off the aquatic vegetation throughout this sensitive ecosystem, manatees int he IRL are dying at rapid rates. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission was feeding starving manatees romaine lettuce which has no nutritional value to Manatees, only to cut costs and push back the public pressure to act on the pollution causing ecological collapse within the Indian River Lagoon. Our campaign exists to educate the public about the plight of our starving manatees, endangered wildlife, and increasingly polluted waterways and ways that we might be able to rectify this situation. If you have photos, videos, or information about any of these topics, please email it to [email protected].

Project Highlight: No Foam Zone
Project Highlight: #1Person1Hour1BagThis program was started by Lisa Brown, Vice Chairperson of FFEP, as a result of the Pandemic. Wanting something productive to do one Saturday morning in March 2020, she decided to get out, by herself and start picking up trash. What she realized was, she spent just 1 hour picking up 1 bag of several pounds trash in my neighborhood. That's how #1Person1Hour1Bag got its name.
We started sharing the Pics and Hashtag to encourage our friends and neighbors and now we have friends across Florida and the US spending just an hour to pick up trash in their areas. Since social distancing is now very important, you can still bring out your friends and neighbors using proper and easy Covid safe protocols. FFEP encourages everyone to spend an hour a week with #1Person1Hour1Bag by picking up the litter that is not only ugly to look at but damaging to our waterways and wildlife. Please post your pictures using the #1Person1Hour1Bag to help spread the word and bring others onboard. |
